Risk-based Testing in Layers - the Lasagna Principle
Well-known and yet underestimated: risk-based testing (RBT) is an approach to prioritize test cases based on their risks and thus increase the efficiency of testing. However, this is often only considered in a very one-sided and one-off way by defining parameters such as likelihood of occurrence and impact. So how can satisfactory risk evaluation be achieved?
The presentation will introduce our vision and approaches for RBT: multi-layered, evidence-based and interdisciplinary. What data can be used for risk assessment? When can it be obtained without manual effort? How can they be interpreted neutrally? The potential of RBT is explained and that there is more to it than simply defining two parameters.

A general or singular view of risks often leads to distortions in test prioritization. Such distortions can be minimized through a dedicated assessment of risks from different perspectives.
Risk assessment is often subjective and based on gut feeling. With the help of quantifiable metrics, however, it can be evidence-based and carried out manually, tool-supported or fully automatically, depending on the perspective.
The balancing act between an overly simple two-parameter approach and a complex multi-layered risk analysis is not easy. It is necessary to determine an aggregated risk from different sources in order to derive effective measures.
