Modeling Complex Product Configurations

Short description

Conceptual data models are not only found in banks and insurance companies, but in these sectors they are indispensable for designing and managing products. Challenges often arise around inheritance, reuse, overriding of data, and maintaining historical records.

In this presentation, we showcase the restructuring and simplification of a modeling approach for product design in the insurance industry. The project’s goal was to reduce the complexity of data models while making the creation and manipulation of data more straightforward.

Value for the audience:
Data modeling, or modeling in general, is often seen as difficult, complex, and time-consuming. With the approach presented here, participants will learn which aspects to focus on in order to reduce complexity, and specifically, how a standard like UML class diagrams, enhanced with just a few extensions, can provide powerful possibilities.

Problems addressed:
Reducing the coplexity of the product model

Tackel the possibility of overriding inherited data

Find a simplified model structure and a customized user interface which supports the method
