Generative AI for Software Development: Study on current utilization in Upper Austria
The impressive capabilities of generative AI are sweeping across many areas, bringing about lasting and disruptive changes to the world of work. These tools are also widely used in software development. However, due to the short time span, there are neither well-researched procedures nor recognized best practices, and doubts arise as to whether AI can fulfill all its promises. Our study, based on a questionnaire, provides insight into the current use of these technologies in the daily development and engineering work of 116 people engaged in this domain in Austrian companies. Our goal is to create a basis for further measures in research, education, and corporate strategies. The results shed light on application scenarios, risks, and opportunities when using generative AI for software engineering tasks.
