The dark side of test automation

The introduction of automation often leads to a decreases of craftsmanship of the process that is automated. We've also seen this in testing; with the introduction of test automation the quality of testing (coverage, debt and insight) decreases.

The presentation will start with this message and I will share some experiences (including some test code) to make this clear.

In the second part of the presentation I will explain the five most common misunderstandings when it comes to test automation (the wish to automate everything, saving money with test automation, automation makes testing easier, every tester should learn how to program and automation = tooling).

At last I will show the alternative for the dark side; I will describe what it takes to introduce test automation succesfully.

Nutzen für den Teilnehmer:
With the lessons learned in this presentation the introduction of test automation in your organization will be more successful! And successful test automation is a very important prerequisite for the introduction of Agile, DevOps and continuous delivery.

Behandelte Problemstellungen:
The expectations organizations have when it comes to test automation are not realistic. Organizations introduce test automation for the wrong reasons. This is one of the most important reasons the introduction of test automation fails.

The importance of a mature test process is underestimated when test automation is introduced. This can lead to worse testing by organization that implemented test automation.

When organizations introduce test automation, not all important skills are represented. Only with the right people in your team test automation can be successful
