Digital Twins are the Tester's Best Friend

Short description

Digital twins make it possible to test a product before it even exists in the real world. At the AVL Software Test Center, we have been using digital twin technology for many years to release software products (in different engineering phases) for use in the automotive industry.

In our talk, we report on the challenges of creating digital twins and the benefits of using them, especially when applying agile development methods in large customer projects with tight deadlines.

In the second half of our talk, we present a practical application of the automated creation of a digital twin, using automata learning to learn state models of measuring devices in the automotive industry (developed in the research project "Learn TWINS" funded by the Austrian Research Agency (FFG)).

Value for the audience:
o V&V managers will gain insight into how digital twins can help mitigate current industry-wide challenges and how they are relatively easy to obtain.
o Testing engineers gain insight into the application of automata learning for the creation of digital twins.

Problems addressed:
AVL is developing test systems and instruments for the automotive industry. For the development and release of software products in this ecosystem the use of digital models / digital twins is crucial.

When releasing software products for an industrial environment, a good testing strategy is required to meet contractual deadlines. The use of digital twins supports this strategy.
